Curious Pictures is known for being one of the country’s leading film and television producers. The company has 16 years experience in production and has a solid reputation as a creative innovator in the industry. The company was established in 1993 – first as Weekly Mail Television, then Mail and Guardian Television. In 1999 it separated from the Mail and Guardian and was renamed Curious Pictures.
The Curious signature is defined by quality, rigorous research methods, uncompromising attention to detail and a commitment to telling resonant and relevant stories. This is evident across the range of our work which spans every genre.
Drama series include Soul City, Hard Copy, The Lab, Tsha Tsha, 4play, Heartlines and Hopeville. Documentary series include Tobias’s Bodies, Real lives, Ordinary People and most recently A Country Imagined presented by Johnny Clegg. They also produce the wildly popular soap opera – Rhythm City.
Curious Pictures also produce advertiser funded programmes – such as Class Act a reality show for SABC 1 and Amstel, as well as brand activation content such as Perfect Sheshebo and Bag it Or Lose it for Unilever. It also has an interactive division producing media for mobile telephones.
Curious Pictures have won many awards for their work including a number of international awards, most recently a Rose D’Or for Hopeville.
Curious Pictures is a black owned company. 51% of the equity is owned by MSG Afrika Media (pty) ltd. Company directors are Given Mkhari, Simphiwe Mdalose, Harriet Gavshon, David Jammy and Tshepi Chadwiya (financial director).
The company has 19 employees, of which 75% are black and 70% are women. 50% of the management is black and 90% are women. It is a certified level 3 BBBEE company.
The company has a longstanding formal internship programme.
The company mission includes merging producing experience and skills with the perspectives and energy of new creative voices. Many of South Africa’s foremost directors and producers have cut their teeth on productions with Curious Pictures.
