PRESS RELEASE - February 2007:
Curious Pictures sails into international waters as they film documentary series on the history making story of Team Shosholoza at the America’s Cup in Valencia, Spain

Team Shosholoza is Africa’s first ever representatives at the oldest international sailing competition in the world, the America’s Cup. Curious Pictures has jumped on board to document this history in the making story of Team Shosholoza as they contend for the oldest trophy in sport - the America’s Cup.

Curious Pictures producer Peter Prukl is currently on location in Valencia, Spain for the next six months to produce a continuing series of half hour films for Supersport

The presence of a South African yachting team at the prestigious America’s Cup marks a historic event, regardless of one’s interest in sailing. As Captain Sarno puts it, the America’s Cup "gives us the chance to present South Africa as a modern, dynamic and exciting country with skills and technological expertise equal to the best in the world."

Over 4 billion people are expected to watch the competition at the America’s Cup. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to expand our reach internationally,” says Executive producer Harriet Gavshon. Footage is shot in Valencia, shipped back to South Africa where co-producer Devon Brough edits it into the final programme. “We will follow the process as long as we have to, “ says Devon Brough. “It is not inconceivable that Team Shosholoza reaches the semi-finals, or even the finals of the America’s Cup despite being Africa’s first entrant into the race”.

One of South Africa’s most innovative and prolific production houses, Curious Pictures, is responsible for successful dramas such as Hard Copy, Tsha Tsha, and Soul City, and are the producers of award winning documentaries such as Ordinary People, The Life and Times of Sara Baartman, and Tobias’s Bodies, Curious Pictures has long been at the forefront of documenting South African life, with documentaries such as After the Deadline about the drafting of the Constitution and A Day with the President, which received the highest television audience for a documentary in South African history. Undoubtedly, Curious has the experience and flair to bring to justice the story of Team Shosholoza and their amazing journey, to tell the story in a way that it stirs the hearts of every patriotic South African, sports lover or not.
The story of Team Shosholoza has everything: People conquering amazing odds to rise to a challenge, the potential triumph of the underdog, the ultimate David and Goliath narrative. But most of all it is a big step for Africa, and a great way of showing that our country can compete with the best of them on a global stage. Team Shosholoza’s riveting journey will no doubt strike a cord with South Africa’s audiences nationwide.

Curious Pictures Team Shosholoza coverage can be viewed on CSN, SS1 and SS2 from January 15th through the end of the race in mid 2007. Check local listings for times and repeats.
